Hear my prayer

O LORD

Let my cry

come to You

Do not hide

Your face from me

Answer me

quickly

For my days

fade like smoke

And my bones

burn like fire

My heart is struck

like withered grass

I forget

to eat my bread

From my groaning

my flesh grows thin

Bone and skin

cling together

I am like

a desert owl

Like a lonely bird

upon the roof

All day long

my enemies mock

My name

they curse

Ashes are my bread

my bread

Tears are in my cup

my cup

You lifted me

then cast me down

My days fade

like grass

Ashes are my bread

my bread

Tears are in my cup

my cup

My days fade

like evening shadows

And I wither

away

But You O LORD

remain forever

Your name endures

through generations

You will arise

have mercy on Zion

The appointed time

has come

For Your servants

love her stones

Even her dust

they cherish

The nations shall fear

Your name O LORD

The kings of earth

Your glory

For the LORD

has built up Zion

He appears

in glory

Ashes are my bread

my bread

Tears are in my cup

my cup

But You remain

through every age

Your throne stands

forever

Ashes are my bread

my bread

Tears are in my cup

my cup

But Your name

endures forever

You remain

forever

He looked down

from holy heights

From heaven

to the earth

To hear the groaning

of prisoners

To release

the doomed to die

So the name of the LORD

will be declared in Zion

And His praise

in Jerusalem

When kingdoms gather

when peoples gather

To worship

the LORD

Do not take me

away too soon

Your years remain

through all generations

You laid

the earth’s foundations

The heavens

are Your hands

They will perish

but You remain

They wear out

like fading clothes

You change them

and they pass away

But You remain

the same

They will perish

but You remain

Your years

will never end

The children

of Your servants dwell secure

Before You

forever

Hear my prayer

O LORD

Let my cry

come to You

You remain

forever

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

These songs are not a word-for-word translation of the Psalms. They were never meant to be. Nor do they try to capture every idea in every psalm. In a song, that would be impossible.

What we have done is capture the essence of each psalm: what matters most in it. Think of each song as a summary. Think of it as a cheat sheet. The purpose of the psalm is still being met. God's word to mankind is still being heard.

Behind many of these lines is word research: deep study of the meaning of the Hebrew. So where a line sounds different from your translation, and you think it is wrong, study it. We believe you will find that the essence of what we sing is true.

The truth is that no one can set the Psalms to music without also becoming a commentator. That is what this is. It is a modern commentary on the Psalms: not only the Psalms themselves, and not only the Psalms being sung. So do not think that every word of the psalm is here. It is not. Read the psalm itself, in full.

Why do this at all? Because we believe God intended humanity to be surrounded by His word. This was always the entertainment He wanted us to have: not hours of television, not a day lost in a phone looking at nonsense. The blessed man of Psalm 1 meditates on God's word day and night. How can we meditate on His word if we do not surround ourselves with it?

As ministers, our first responsibility is to share God's word with people. That is what these songs are for.
